Introduction

On  June 6,  around 6:30 pm during a rainstorm, the power in my house went out. Moments later, Florida Power & Light sent us an email detailing the cause as being fallen tree branches, and that it would take them about 6 hours to restore power.  So, I mentally prepared myself to spend the rest of the night in the dark, except for a few candles. However, it soon dawned on me, that I could not make anything to eat, watch tv, or even use my cell phone much so I could preserve my battery and the wifi was also down. Thankfully, our power returned two hours later, but those couple of hours spent in the dark were very eye opening because my lifestyle changed. I quickly realized how fortunate we are to be in modern times, and that there are millions of people in the past who lived without electricity. Then it dawned on me, that there are actually millions of people currently without steady access to electricity in many countries around the world. Assuming the ability to work more hours, communicate electronically, and preserve food in a refrigerator is important to people in rural areas and does not have a negative impact on their lives, they will need access to reliable energy.
