Sustainable Development Goals

The United Nations has also listed affordable and sustainable energy for all as one of their Sustainable Development Goals that they hope to achieve by the year 2030.

SDG7 Energy

Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson gave a speech during the Vienna Energy Forum this year detailing the importance of fighting climate change as a way to alleviate poverty. In an effort to inspire his audience to become more cooperative in order to fulfill the Paris agreement and achieve sustainable and clean energy for everyone he said,

“Fighting poverty and combatting climate change are the same fight … That is why the 2030 Agenda has established the first ever universal goal on energy, SDG7: to ‘Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.’ Achieving SDG 7 on energy, with its targets on universal access, energy efficiency and renewable energy, will open a new world of opportunity for billions of people. It will lay the foundation for the eradication of poverty, for climate action and for a sustainable world. Simply put, without progress on SDG7, it will be impossible to achieve the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement.” (“Deputy Secretary-General”)

All countries should aspire to relieve the stress fossil fuels have put on the environment, and they should want to help the communities of people who live too far away from the grid to have electricity.Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson also said “[A]t the current pace of progress, we still won’t achieve SDG7 by 2030.”
