According to this report which was conducted in 2016, Nigeria was one of the countries who barely began to establish an enabling environment for energy access.  This subsequently resulted in a rank amongst the worst countries with regard to enabling policy environment in those areas. The following charts show where Nigeria stands in relation to other access-deficit countries in the areas of energy access, grid electrification frameworks,  mini grid frameworks, and the total score for each indicator. Please click on the gallery below to see the pictures fully.

RISE Report

These charts show that the government still has a lot of work to do in order to create an environment that will support renewable energy. I am aware that the National Council on Power approved the Sustainable Energy For All Action Agenda (SE4ALL-AA) with the goal of providing both your rural and urban citizens with access to affordable and reliable energy ("Sustainable Energy For All Action Agenda" 10). However, based on the findings from RISE, I would suggest that government officials in Nigeria start working with experts who will help them create the right policies in order to address these concerns: make energy efficiency a priority, develop policies that will make their progress public and easy to track, and create regulations detailing procedures for how consumers should connect to mini grids.I would also recommend incorporating policies that will protect and minimize the impact the development of renewable energy technologies could have on habitats and wildlife by ensuring they do not conflict with conservation efforts. Although the energy produced from hydroelectric, solar, or wind power do not emit any air or water pollution, installing these technologies can have a negative effect on our environment. For example, a dam that is built for a hydro power plant might block the path of fish migration. This has the potential to change the ecology of the river which could negatively impact the other animals and plants not only in the river but also surrounding it. As you know, solar energy projects require a large amount of land for their construction, but clearing the needed land can also have negative and long-term effects on the plants and animals. The last example comes from the fast-moving blades of some wind turbines. These blades are used to generate electricity, but unfortunately, these wind projects have directly or indirectly caused the deaths of bats and birds.  The continued deaths of these animals could possibly lead to their populations’ decline especially if these species were already targeted as a result of other human activities. If certain obstacles to this are unavoidable, then establishing measures that would work to restore the environment will be crucial.
